Washington
County
lies on the Ohio River at the confluence of the Muskingum River,
roughly one hundred miles southeast of Columbus, the state capital of
Ohio. It derives its name from George Washington, first President of
the United States. Washington County is one of the four counties into
which the Northwest Territory was divided, prior to Ohio's statehood in
1803.

Across the Ohio River, which is Washington County's
eastern and
southern border, are Tyler, Pleasants and Wood Counties in the State of
West Virginia.
