WILLIAM LOOMIS

Lawyer & Judge of 7th Judicial District, Marietta, William Loomis was born in New London CT on 01 Feb 1837. His father was Christopher C. Loomis, who emigrated to Ohio and engaged in the mercantile business. He was a New England native whose family had come to America from England around 1621. [NB: I arrived at this date because the book was published in 1876 and the exact text states the family was in America for 250 years.] William attended Marietta Academy and Marietta High School. He then assisted his father in the mercantile business. His business career only lasted a few months before he became employed at the Clerk's office and began to study law. In 1857, he was admitted to the bar, and in 1868, became a judge. By 1873, his term had expired, and he began a successful law career with his partners. They comprised the firm of Loomis, Alban and Oldham. In 1860, he married Frances Wheeler of Marietta.
