Lodi Township

From the History of the Hocking Valley:

There are in Lodi township three villages, Jerseyville, Garden and Mooretown. Jerseyville was changed to Shade, Jerseyville contained two stores, one harness shop, one blacksmith shop, one hotel, a post office and two churches, Methodist Episcopal and Christian, its population was about 175. Garden contained a store, gunsmith shop, black smith shop, postoffice and one church- Methodist Episcopal. Mooretown was later changed to Pratt's Fork, the population was mostly agricultural, it had a population in the 1870's of about 150, and contained one store, two blacksmith shops and one post office. The first gristmill was erected by Joseph Thompson and later the mill was operated by Henry Blazier. The next mill was built in 1825 by Ezra Miller. Next to milling interest, which was one of necessity, was the schools. Pleasant Valley Seminary formerly was located at Jerseyville and was opened December 1867, and was under the superintendancy of Professor Daniel D. Clark a graduate of Ohio University.

From this record we see that both Thomas's parents have died by 1871. We see that in this year Thomas is living in Deavertown, Morgan County, Ohio.

In 1874 Thomas's first wife Magdalena Haning's father Isaac Dillon Haning dies and leaves part of his estate to Magdalena Robinson (deceased) and Thomas's three sons in Perry county, and the attorney charges fees for travelling to Perry County.

We have received a copy of a letter from Rosetta Robinson to her sisters in LaFarge Wisconsin and also copies of death notices of these sisters. In Alice Strait's obituary, it is written that "Thomas William Robinson moved his family to Coffeyville, Kansas, in the mid 1870's." Coffeyville, Kansas was a new town built in Indian Territory and supposed to be rich in farm land. Many were enticed there with the promise of growing rich in cattle farming, From the Montgomery County, Coffeyville, Kansas internet web site-" Coffeyville was named after James H. Coffey who had a trading post at an Osage camp called Talley Springs, (not on railroad). Octave Chanute surveyed and platted the town north of Talley Springs called Old Coffeyville (on railroad). Old Coffeyville was a cattle terminal; Leavenworth, Lawrence and Gulf Railroad terminal; U.P. R. R. The town was founded in 1869." I now believe that after receiving the inheritance money of his father's and father in law's, Thomas moved his family west to make his fortune in the cattle industry. Unfortunately he died there in 1878, cutting his plans short. Matilda moves back to McLuney according to Alice's obituary and brought the children with her. " I found a Perry County Infirmary record (Poorhouse) listing Matilda Robinson, Mary L., Ida A., and Arthelia Rose for the year 1881. Matilda dies in 1882 leaving the remainder of the family on their own. Mary L. is found living with brother Charles Harvey. " The oldest daughter Rose was bonded out to a family in Ohio and Lucy and Alice at the age of 8 years were sent by covered wagon to La Farge, Wisconsin to live with her mother's brother, Henry Smith."

In 1880 we find that George B. Robinson is married to Helen Dusenberry, John William is married to Elizabeth Tysinger, and Charles Harvey is married to Lydia Stoneburner and all are living 4 miles from Deavertown in McLuney. Mary Lydia is living with brother Charles Harvey and his wife in the 1880 census.
Mary Lydia married a Mr. Welch and lived her life in Deavertown, Ohio.

Ida A. married a Mr. Shell, and lived in San Diego, California.

In 1879 John William Robinson is a member of the Lodge at Deavertown. Then moves to Glouster Ohio where he is a blacksmith and owns his home and shop. He has a wife, children and lived out his life as a teacher of the blacksmith trade. John dies in Glouster, Athens County where he worked as a blacksmith up until 6 years before his death in 1942.

George stays in McLuney, Perry County and works in the San Toy Coal mine until he dies in 1927. There are several court documents about George and his son Lawrence that is injured while working as a minor in the San Toy coal mine and about a lawsuit they pressed and 500 dollars was received for the injury. He has children, and remarries several times after the death of his wife Hellen Dusenberry.

In 1934- Rose is treated to a surprise visit with her sisters from La Farge, Wisconsin who she had not seen in 53 years. The reunion took place in Somerset, Ohio. Attending the reunion was Samuel Robinson, brother, and sisters Mr. Lucy Melvin, Mrs. Alice Strait, Mrs. Mary Welch, and brother Charles Harvey. This was reported in the Somerset newspaper and also the Columbus, Ohio citizen, newspaper. Title of article was "Family reunited after 53 years".

In 1936 Rose Robinson signs as an informant on Charles Harvey's death certificate. They were living in Somerset, Reading Twp., Perry County, Ohio. Charles's wife Lydia Stoneburner had already passed away.

In 1948 Rose Robinson dies and gives the home she shared in Somerset with her brother Charles Harvey to her caretakers.

Edith Robinson was also the daughter of John Lee Robinson and Lydia Bishop. She married James Clowse and her family in the Athens county census was listed as:

Pratt's Fork

This is a very small town between Athens and Pomeroy, Ohio on state route 33 south of Athens. My Robinson ancestors from Fauqier county, Virginia, made Pratt's Fork their home between the years of 1840 and 1870. Pratt's Fork was called Mooretown before it was renamed to Pratt's Fork. There is a church high on a hill above the town and a few buildings on the main road. Behind the church is the Pratt's fork cemetery. The Athens county genealogical society has transcribed the cemetery and a copy of it can be purchased from them.

The above tombstones are starting to crumble away. They were purchased by my ancestor and their son Thomas William Robinson who was living in Deavertown at the time of his fathers death in 1871. The church and cemetery is difficult to get to, the driveway up the hill is extremely steep, quite frightening if you drive a mini van like I do. There are hundreds of people buried in the cemetery according to the many tombstones. The church is maintained by the township, it does not hold any services. When I was there last the pews were being removed and the church was being white washed.

I have 2 letters from Waldren Williams of Pratts Fork, Ohio to Esbon Sloan of Carter County, Kentucky. Waldren was married to Esbon's sister, Orinda Sloan. Esbon and Orinda were children of John Sloan and Deborah Tubbs, who are buried in the Pratts Fork Cemetery. The letters were found in Esbon's bible. Esbon was my Great Grandfather. The letters were copied as written. I have the originals. Paul D. Roseberry

I have just had a severe attact of rheumatism am better now, Sally has been complaining some with rheumatism though she has been better this winter than she has been in a long time. Orinda is so big and fat you would hardly know her. When you answer tell us something about Ruth and her family, if she still lives in Kentucky. We have had quite an open winter sofar with but little frost this month. I am getting in logs for a saw set on the place to come after harvest next. Corn here is woorth 45 to 50 cts per bush and wheat 75. The new crop of wheat at this time does not look as well as I have saw wheat look in other years. Roads here now are almost impassable.
