Annual Homecoming held at
Orbiston (1960's Nelsonville Tribune newspaper) By Georgia Kilpatrick Orbiston held its annual homecoming July 28 at the Orbiston Methodist Church. It was voted last year not to bring a basket dinner. The bell was rung at 1 pm by Grace McManaway Gaulke, at this time the group assembled in the church for the following program: The president Millard Donley, who was born and reared in Orbiston presided. The program opened by the congregation singing "The Church in The Wild Wind" with Mrs. Ethel Cheeseman Cook at the piano. Bud Carsner gave the opening prayer. Georgia Kilpatrick was in charge of memorial services for those who had died since last homecoming. Gena Mahony and Millard Donley sang "Ivory Palaces" with Ethel Cheeseman at the piano. This being the favorite hymn of Susan Zockine Harvey, who passed away recently. Others on the memorial list are: Florence Carsner Hale, Gwen Jones Coburn, Charley Cheeseman, Lacy Donley, Victor Tucker, Bessie Hull Conley, Howard Miller, Clyde Pierce, Mont Anderson, Walter Anderson, Myrtle Howell, Fred ?, Lulu Shettleworth, Mrs. Anna Lanning, and Nora Ainsley-Williams. "The golden gates were opened and a gentle voice said Come, and angels from the other side, Welcomed our dear friends home." A free will offering of 49.25 was turned over to the treasurer Mrs. Grace Gaulke. The money is used to repair the entrance to the church. Linda Wison sang a solo "In the Garden" with Gena Mahony at the piano. The Annual Orbiston Reunion 1967 By Georgia Kilpatrick Orbiston held its annual homecoming Sunday July 30th at the Orbiston M. E. Church. At 12 noon several families enjoyed a basket dinner at tables on the church lawn. At 1 p.m. the first bell was rung by Georgia Kilpatrick and at 1:30 p.m. the last bell was rung by Mrs. Ruth Donley Wood, who was born and raised in Orbiston. With the ringing of the last bell the group assembled in the church for the following program. The president Mrs. Pat Robinson Dearing of Heath, Ohio presided. Bud Carsner gave the opening prayer. Georgia Kilpatrick gave the adderess of welcome. Mrs. Marlene Robinson Mitchell, Christy Dearing, Mrs. Shirley Robinson Allen sang "Kneel at the cross" accompanied at the piano by Pat Robinson Dearing. Paula Taylor sang "The Old Country Church" with her grandmother, Mrs. Gina Mohoney at the piano. The secretary Mrs. Letha Griffin Smith read the minutes of the last years homecoming. Mrs. Ethel Wallace was in charge of memorial services for those who had passed away since last homecoming-- Holberson (Red) Smart, William H. Robinson, Clarence McCall, Richard Donley Jr., Bundy Galvin, Mary Waldich Shafer, Frank Holiday and Bertha Gill. Lead by Millard Donley, the congregation sang "When we all get to Heaven" with Mrs. Ethel Cheeseman Cook at the piano. An invitation was extended to the group to attend Jobs Homecoming which will be held Sunday September 3 at Jobs Methodist Church, basket dinner at noon. Mr. and Mrs. Don Mohoney of Jobs sang two numbers, " If I Could live my Life Over" and Jesus Signed My Pardon", with Mrs. Mohoney at the piano. A free will offering of $29.32 was turned over to the treasurer Mrs. Grace McManaway Gaulke. Officers elected for 1968 -- Millard Donley, president; Ethel Wallace, Secretary; Grace Gaulke, Treasurer. It was voted to have the homecoming of 1968 at the same time, the last Sunday in July at the same place. Our oldest member, Mrs. Dicie Carsner was not able to be present but sent thanks to all who sent her cards on her 96th birthday July 16. Dicie lives with her daughter Edith at 1261 Aberdeen Ave., Columbus. Mrs Millard Donley and her granddaughter and Mrs. Ruth Donley Wood composed a trio who sang two selections. Get well cards were signed by the group to send to several who were reported confined at home. Rev. Robert Knox of Heath Church gave poem "Beyond the Sunset". The homecoming closed with all singing "God Be With You Til We Meet Again". Mrs. Ethel Cook at the piano. Rev. Robert Knox gave the benediction. |
