Murray City Alumni Weekend Festivities

Every year the Murray City Alumni committee hosts two gatherings for
the alumnus. Friday night there is a fish and fresh pork side fry in
the Murray City Park on the site of the old Sunday Creek Coal Mine no.
5/25. Nearly one hundred former classmates and coal mine
descendants come from all over the country to eat, talk and reminisce.
On Saturday night a formal sit down dinner of roast beef and
turkey is held in the Party Center of the American Legion. New
members of the current class year are introduced, a college scholarship is
passed out and alumni members are formally announced by class year.
There is a very short business meeting sharing the current news,
deaths of previous alumni in the current year, and a record is given of
the alumni funds for the next year by the treasurer. A great time
is had by all who attend and many say how wonderful it is to meet up
again with former classmates and to catch up with the news.
On Friday night 2007 the class of 1947 celebrated its 60th reunion with
7
members attending. The class of 1952 celebrated its 55th
reunion with 8 attending. 1957 had its 50th reunion. Ten members of the
class of 1959 attended. On Saturday Almeda Moody, age 93 and graduate
of the class
of 1932 was the eldest attending alumnus and she received one
dozen red
roses, with Phyllis Barber age 92 running a close second from the
class of 1933.
The class of 1943 had six attending on Friday night, 2 attended
from 1954,
5 from the class 1956 . The Class of 1950 had 3 alumnus attend.
Also a scattering of members from the years 1960 to current
year attended. Murray City High School no longer exists, but graduates
are still celebrated as they are residents of Murray City and because
of the consolidation they graduate from Nelsonville York High
School.
I will be placing photos from 2004 through 2007 on this website. Check back often as this process will take several days.
If you would like to attend the Murray City Alumni Festival you can
purchase your food tickets by writing the Murray City Alumni Treasurer
