This has got to be one of the most beautiful victorian family photos I have ever seen.

The family photo is "Charlotte's" daughter Hester Ann (Munyon) Phillips with husband Augustus Phillips taken in
Logan Co. IL. Some of the Coates family moved to Logan County, Illinois around the end of the civil war.

ARTHUR COATES

Arthur Coates was born about 1770 in Ireland, and died March 23, 1826 in Athens County, Ohio. He married MARY ANN MORRIS. She was born August 26, 1773 in Lambart, Chester CO. PA, and died 1848 in Athens CO. OH.. In the late 1700's Arthur was found in the census of Fayette county, Pennsylvania and then in Athens county, Ohio. "In 1800 the first ferry boat was operated by old Arthur Coates, called Coates' Ferry, transporting passengers, animals and goods across the Hock Hocking River a few rods below where the South Bridge now stands at Athens." (History of Athens County by Charles M. Walker 1869, pg. 204) Arthur also owned a large farm in Mechanicsburg, where the Athens County Hospital, now "The O U Ridges" stands. "The Athens Mental Health Center opened on January 9, 1874 on land purchased from the Arthur Coates family farm. http://www.cats.ohiou.edu/athens/greens/theridges.html" Arthur was very active in the affairs of the county and was a surveyor of Athens county roads, helped pay for the first court house, was a member of the Athens County Grand Jury from 1809 to 1814, a township trustee in 1815 and was a member of The First Presbyterian church. No documentation exists which names the children of Arthur Coates, but from census records and obituary records the following can be ascertained as his family as his was the only Coates family in Athens county in the time period shown.

1865, November 21, James and Mary Coates sold 320 acres of land to John Welch. This was the west half of section no. 35 in twp no. 11 of Range no. 15 in Athens Ohio. This was witnessed by J. M. Welch and Charles W. Coates.
State of Ohio Athens County, on this 20th day of November 1865, before me, J. M. Welch, a Notary Public in aforesaid County, personally came said James Coates and Mary Coates his wife and acknowledged the signing and sealing of the above instrument to be thus a free act and deed and said Mary being by me examined apart from thus said husband and the contents of said deed made known to her declared that she signed, sealed, and acknowledged the same voluntarily, and that she is still content therewith. Given my hand and official seal. J. M. Welch Notary Public. The foregoing deed is stamped with a one Dollar US IR Stamp. Enlisted for record Dec. 30th 1865, and Recorded January 18, 1866.

She married Casper Daniel Stalder November 17, 1861 in Athens county, Ohio. He was born November 19, 1836 in Athens county, the son of Andreas (Andrew) Stalder and wife Frances Schoonover. Andrew came to Ohio as a boy from Switzerland in the Baron Rudolph DeSteiguer and Jacob Stalder family group which located in Bern township before 1820.

Mary Stalder - Aged woman passes away
Mrs. Mary L. Stalder, aged 72, wife of C.D. Stalder, died last night about twelve o'clock at her home on Main St. Mrs. Stalder had been quite ill for the past month suffering from asthma.
Mrs. Stalder's maiden name was Coates and she was born near Carbondale. On November 17, 1861, she was united in marriage to Mr. Stalder and they have resided in Chauncey all of their married life. Two years ago last, they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Stalder was the mother of ten children, four of whom are dead. She leaves a husband, who is very ill at present and the following children, Mrs. George Gabriel, of the Plains, Mrs. Noah Sommers, of Nelsonville, Mrs. Robert Hixson and Mrs. A. H. England of Chauncey , R. C. Stalder of Elyria. and Milo C. Stalder of Chauncey, Twenty-three grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two brothers and one sister, are also left.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later. Burial will be made in the Nye Cemetery here.

Mary Stalder
Mary L., daughter of Mary and James Coates, was born near Carbondale, Athens county, Ohio April 6, 1843, died at her home in Chauncey 12-27-1915, aged 72 years, 6 months and 23 days.
She was united in marriage to Casper D. Stalder, November 17, 1861 and to this union were born ten children, four sons and six daughters, six of whom are yet living as follows, -- Francis Gabriel, The Plains, O; Ollie Sommers, Nelsonville, O; Rinda Hixson and Ella England, Chauncey, O; Ralph C. Stalder, Elyria, O; Milo C. Stalder, Chauncey, O; two sons and two daughters preceded the mother to the spirit world. She also leaves an aged husband, two brothers, one sister, twenty-three grand children, seven great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
She united with the Methodist church in early life. She was a kind and affectionate wife and mother, a generous neighbor, ever ready to respond with a helping hand and encouraging word to those in need....

The depth of our sorrow we cannot tell
In the loss of our mother we loved so well;
No one knows how much we miss you,
You were so good, so kind, so true.
'Tis hard to think that you are missing;
We sigh, we weep, we pray for you,
And while you lie in peaceful sleep,
Your memory we shall always keep.

She was buried in Nye Cemetery in Chauncey, Ohio next to her husband and son.

Ollie Prudence Stalder daughter of Casper Stalder and Mary Lovinia Coates married Noah Somers who was the son of George Somers (Athens county, Ohio) and wife Harriet Pauline Skinner (England). George's parents were Thomas Somers (Nova Scotia) and wife Martha Taylor (Lancashire, England) who purchased 93 1/2 acres of land near Taylor Ridge in Athens county, Ohio abt. 1840. Noah was a brick mason and laid the brick for the Nelsonville, Ohio High School in Nelsonville, Ohio. Noah and Ollie's daughter Navada Somers received her teaching certificate from Ohio Universtiy in 1918 and after teaching school at Doanville married Quinton Quinn of Murray City, Ohio. Murray City- Navada M. Quinn, 85, of Murray City died Friday evening at the Kimes Nursing Home in Athens after an extended illness. Born in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late Noah Somers and Ollie Stalder Somers. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Murray City. She is survived by a son an daughter in law , two brothers, William (Marvel) Somers of Huntington WV, and Raymond (Pie) Somers of Nelsonville; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Frances) Stage and Mrs. Lucille Weaver of Nelsonville; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton Quinn in 1966; a step-daughter, Ruth Loper; and a brother, George Somers. Services will be Tuesday at 1pm at the Johnson -Souers Funeral Home with the Rev. Gordon Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight and Monday anytime.

OH to Logan Co. IL. On the way to Holt Co. MO Ed died near Curzon, MO and was laid to rest in an unmarked grave under a large tree. the following is by descendant Lois Branch.

She married EDMUND MUNYON August 28, 1846 in Athens Co. OH., son of WILLIAM MUNYON and NANCY PHILLIPS. He was born November 07, 1818 in VA, and died Abt. 1890 in Curzon, MO..

Notes for FRANCES CARLOTTA "CHARLOTTE" COATS:
The Family Bible, published 1860 by American Bible Society of New York, says that Frances Sarlotta (Coates) Munyon was born on 21 Nov 1822, Dayton, OH.
This was written many years after her birth. Her Bible also states that Edmund Munyon was born 7 Nov 1818 and gives names and birth dates of her children.
The writing is very, very faded and hard to read. This Bible is in the hands of Hester Ann Dyer of Oregon, MO.
Edmund lived in Ohio and moved to Logan Co. IL. about 1868 with other members of the Coats and Munyon family. They settled in Poordo, close to Mt. Pulaski, where they built a log cabin. Sometime around 1889 to 1891 they traveled by covered wagon towards Kansas where some of the Munyon relatives lived. Edmund caught pheumonia and died in Curzon, Mo. They buried him in the Pollock Cemetery (no stone) under a large evergreen tree and Charlotte went on to Forbes, Holt Co. MO. to live with her daughter, Susan. (This info provided by Dollie Deibert, Grandaughter of Charlotte)
Charlotte earned her living as a housekeeper until she died at 12:15 pm on 15 Feb 1924, St. Joseph, MO. She is buried in Forbes, Mo. Her Grandaughter, Hester Ann (Strickland) Dyer lived with her mother and Grandmother Munyon in Oregon, MO. In 1983 Hester said in a taped conversation that she remembers her Grandmother as a fun lovin woman who enjoyed quilting and could cook up a storm. Hester is in possession of the Munyon family Bible and also owns the camel backed trunk that came across the prairie with Edmund and Charlotte.

Thomas of her Great GreatGrandmother, Frances Carlotta Coats Munyon, holding her corncob pipe, has written on the back: Charlotte Coats Munyon, Uncle Charley Coats sister, Uncle John Coats Sister and Henry Munyon's Mother. I wrote to Eva Belle (Munyon) Duncan Smith in Illinois and asked her:
How do you spell Coats, Coates? Answer: It's spelled Coats.
On the back of Frances Charlotte Coats picture it says siter of Uncl Charles & Uncle John, mother of Henry Munyon. Answer: Uncle Charley was Bessie's father.

He married a frail young girl that is said to have been killed when Lum Mohn in a drunken stupor frightened the horses pulling the wagon that James and she were riding in. James' wife threw the shawl she was wearing over her head and when James got the horses stopped and reached for his wife, uncovering her head, found she was dead.
