Chase Baptist Church, Chase, Ohio

The following was found with pictures from the Chase/Bradfield families from
Meigs and Athens Counties. It appears to be a newspaper article, but there is no
printing on the back so it may have been printed especially for the family.
There were also several pictures identified as "Chase Family Reunion" with
it, but only a very few people are identified. It is transcribed as
printed.

The one hundredth anniversary of the settlement of John Merrill Chase
in Alexander township, Athens county, Ohio, was celebrated at Albany on
Saturday, August 26, 1916.

The farm on which the settlement was made is now owned and occupied by
his great-grandson, Charles Chase.

The members of the family present represented the six children of John
Merrill Chase who reared families. Their oldest child, Mrs. Polly Chase
Logan, had no children; their youngest child, Miss Lydia Chase, never
married. Their other children, three sons and three daughters, named in the
order of age, were John Merrill Chase, Jr., Thomas Jefferson Chase, Hannah
Chase Woodyard, Gardner Chase, Miriam Chase Benedict, Abigail Chase
Bradfield.

The descendants of John Merrill Chase, Jr., who were at this reunion
were five in number:---John Merrill Chase, 713 Indiana ave., Charleston, W.
Va.; Mrs. Alice Chase Bradfield, Rutland, Ohio, Route 2; Mrs. Elsie
Bradfield Welch, Herington, Kan.; Miss Marion Alice Welch, Herington, Kan.;
Miss Bertha Bradfield, 508 Morris St., Charleston W. Va.

The following twelve descendants of Thomas Jefferson Chase were
present:---Martin Chase Harrisonville, Ohio; Mrs. Jessie Chase, Miss Gladys
Chase, Walter Chase, Albany, Ohio; Mrs. Madge Chase Wright and son Harold G.
Wright, 9819 Anderson ave., Cleveland, Ohio; John Merrill Davis, his sons
Charles Elliot and William Merrill Davis, his grandson James Boyd Davis, Rio
Grande, Ohio; also Mrs. Myrta Chase, wife of Martin, Leonidas Chase, husband
of Jessie, and Harry L. Wright, husband of Madge; Mrs. S. E. C. Cox, Rector,
Ark., and her granddaughter Laura Marie McAnnally, Jackson, Tenn.

The descendants of Hannah Chase Woodyard were out in full force,
numbering twenty-two persons. Here is the list:---James Presley Woodyard,
Athens, Ohio, Route 5; Ward Beecher Woodyard, Shade, O., Route 1, with his
wife, Mrs. Abbie Woodyard and his three daughters, Ella Brown, Pearl Amanda,
and Lois; Mrs. Josephine Tucker Woodyard, widow of Wilson Woodyard, with her
son Sandusky Woodyard and her grand-daughter Keziah Josephine Day, all of
Albany, Ohio, Route 2, with his wife, Mrs. Leila Woodyard and their five
children, Alice Brown, Elizabeth Hamilton, Ruth Adeline, Ella Marie, and
Howard Theodore Woodyard; Leonard Woodyard, Albany, Ohio, Route 2, with his
wife, Mrs. Kate A. Woodyard, their son, Leo Tewksbury Woodyard and daughter,
Adria Irene Woodyard. Mrs. Kate Wells Chase is also a descendant of Hannah
Chase Woodyard.

Next in order comes the family of Gardner Chase. A goodly
representation of this family was present, made up of the following fifteen
persons: Henry M. Chase, Albany, Ohio, Route 3, with his wife, Mrs. Eunice
VanBibber Chase and the ten year old boy Clyde Hooper, whom they are
bringing up; Oscar E. Chase, with his wife, Mrs. Mary Chase and son Orville;
Mrs. Ada M. Ator, daughter of Hosmer Chase, with her husband Zaddack B. Ator
and son Harold Chase Ator; Mrs. Mary Chase Blake, Albany, Ohio, Route 1,
also a daughter of Hosmer Chase; Masters Frank and Wendell Robinson, Marion,
Ohio, descended from the oldest daughter of Hosmer Chase; Gardner J Chase,
Albany, Ohio, Route 2, with his wife, Mrs. Kate Wells Chase and son Wayne H.
Chase.
Mrs. Miriam Benedict Grapes was the only descendant of Miriam Chase
Benedict able to attend this meeting. She lives at Rutland, Ohio.

Mrs. Abigail Chase Bradfield was represented by Mrs. (Ger)Linda
Bradfield, Rutland, Ohio, Route 2, widow of George W. Bradfield. She was
present with her son Herbert E. Bradfield, who lives at home with his
mother, and her daughters, Miss Addie Bradfield who teaches at Fontogany
(Tontogany?, O., and Miss Eunice Bradfield, who teaches near Athens, Ohio.

Not only was every branch of the family represented in this reunion but
also different parts of the country, namely, West Virginia, Tennessee,
Arkansas and Kansas.

The meetings both forenoon and afternoon were held in the grove by the
old academy building.

Several members of the family present were students here in times past,
going back in one case to 1863.

It was found by careful inquiry that the work of preparing the history
of the different branches of the family with a view to publication in volume
is approaching completion. A committee living in South-eastern Ohio to have
charge of gathering this material and putting it into uniform style and
regular order. The two members of that committee to whom all records should
be sent and to whom all inquiries should be addressed are Mrs. Kate Wells
Chase, Albany, O., Route 2, and John M. Davis, Rio Grande, O.
Just as soon as possible a copy of this report will be placed in the
hands of every head of a family in the entire connection. All are urged to
be interested and active in the work above outlined.

Reverend Elijah Robinson and wife Emily Chase

Emily was the daughter of Gardner Farmer Chase and wife Anna Woodyard. Gardner Farmer Chase was the son of John Merrill Chase born March 1, 1774 in Essex, Newbury Massachusetts and John died in Alexander Twp. Athens county, Ohio Oct. 27, 1853. John's wife was Marian Murry.

Elijah Robinson was the son of Aaron and Susan Bolin Robinson. He was a member of `I` Co. 7th Ohio Cavalry in the Civil War.
