Nancy Brower Fri Jan 31 16:49:50 1997..GATES Am researching the GATES families of Athens and Washington Cos. I have lots of information that I would be happy to share with anyone who is interested. I am particularly interested in proving the parentage of my Rufus H. GATES who was born in Ohio ca. 1810. He married Hester BAKER in Washington Co. in 1832. They were living in Athens Co. in 1850 with their four children: Philo Philander, Elizabeth, Stephen P., and Rufus A.
Nancy Brower Fri Jan 31 16:53:38 1997..GARDNER Looking for information on the family of Thomas and Margaret GARDNER. They were living in Athens Co. at the time of the 1850 census. Thomas was b. ca. 1783 and Margaret b. ca. 1792. They likely had children: Margaret Ann, Thomas Jr., Henry L., Lora A., Charlotte, Adaline P., Mary Ann, Emeline, and Rachel. There may be others as well. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows about this family.
J. Blankenship Fri Jan 31 18:41:33 1997 . I am trying to find the birth county and parents of Thomas F. Weaver. Thomas was evidently 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 Black. He was living in Athens Co., by 1880. He married Willie L. Cooper 27/Dec/1883. He was born in North Carolina in April of 1853. I understand there was a Cherokee/Black community in Lee Township. Can you give me a contact for that community or guide me to some publications that could be of use. Their children were Estella b. 11/Feb/1890, Grace E. born Oct/1886, Mabel born May 1892, Oscar born May 1894, Charley born July 1896 and Viola born April 1900. They later moved to California. I am also interested in finding out about Willie's parents Douglas Calvin (or Calvin Douglas) Cooper and Nancy A. Cassell. Douglas may have had a brother named Nelson. They were supposedly Choctow or Sandusky Seneca. Great Uncle Charley wasn't sure which it was but he talked about the Indian baskets his grandparents, the Coopers, made. I'd appreciate any assistance you can give. Thanks Soquala
