Millfield Coal Mine #6 was the site of the Largest Mine Disaster ever in Athens county, Ohio *Click here to read more about the disaster * Millfield Man Killed in Mine March 22, 1934 James Russell, age 39, of East Millfield, a day man employed in the No. 6 mine of the Sunday Creek Coal Company at Millfield, was killed instantly by electricity about 2:45 Saturday afternoon when his head touched a trolley wire. Russell was crawling between two cars of a loaded trip at the bottom of the mine when he raised his head, bumping the wire. He was not wearing a safety hat. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Russell of near Chauncey. He leaves his wife Mrs. Florence Russell, and five children, a sister Mrs. Hoisington of Greens Run and seven brothers, Milo, Bruce, Sam, Alva, Clarence, Roy and Tom. Funeral services were held in the Millfield M. E. Church with the Rev. Martin of the Pentecostal Church of Athens in charge. Mrs. Pauline Humphrey accompanied by Mrs. Bertha Simpson sang three hymns. Brothers served as pall bearers. Burial was in Hilltop Cem. Victim was Father of Three Children Jan. 1, 1941 Charles Leffler, age 37, father of three children was killed late Tuesday afternoon when caught by a fall of coal in Millfield Mine No. 6 in Dover Township. Funeral services were held at the Millfield Methodist church and interment was made at Greenlawn cemetery. He leaves his wife Isabelle Brown Leffler, and three children, Charles Jr., Sarah Frances and Janet Sue. He also leaves six brothers and sisters, Mrs. Nellie Adams, Mrs. Goldie Deltra, and Mrs. Bessie Mingus, of Glouster, and Mrs. Alice Mingus of Greens Run, Floyd Leffler of Glouster and Virgil Leffler of Columbus. He is also survived by his father in law Fred Brown of Millfield. Mrs. Leffler is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Brown of Millfield. Mr. Leffler had spent most of his life in the Sunday Creek Valley and he had been a miner of a number of years. |
